yellow post it note that says New Year New Plans pinned to bulletin board As another year begins, HOA board members should consider offering some thoughts about how the Association can make the community an even better place to live in the New Year and beyond.

How often do you communicate with your residents? Does your homeowners association have a website or newsletter? Let’s assume you do! (If you don’t, you should make a resolution to start one this January).

Responsibility

Encourage all residents to take responsibility for adhering to rules and meeting the financial obligations of the community – like paying their HOA fees. This will help avoid the costly and unpleasant task of legal actions or fines from the HOA board.

Sharing

All residents should have the opportunity to share ideas, perspectives and concerns so everyone can all work together to build an even better community. Residents are an important part of the community voice. Invite them regularly to community board meetings.

Fellowship

All residents should make an effort to actively participate in the recreational, social and cultural activities of the community where they can meet their neighbors and enjoy fellowship.

Involvement

All residents should try to attend homeowner’s association meetings and take the time to review important information about the community. HOA board members should also always be on the lookout for potential board members and residents interested in participating in the Association’s governing process as HOA board members.

Inclusiveness

All residents should actively welcome new residents, making all owners and renters feel like they are part of the community.

Pride

All residents should be proud to live in their community and recommend it to others who are looking for a good place to call home. When they do, you want them talk positively about the homeowners association, and the only way they can do so is by being informed and having a positive experience.

As members of the elected HOA board, it starts with you. It should be your goal to serve as neighborhood facilitators and set good examples even as you plan for a future well beyond your tenure on the board.

Hopefully these topics promote the HOA board connection with the community to promote participation in enhancing the overall health and safety of all residents. Communication is one of the most important aspects of being an HOA board member and residents should have every opportunity to get involved.
